Moxie Bread Co. North Boulder Heirloom Bakery

A Bakery Built Around Real Grain

Moxie Bread Co. is not your average bakery. The North Boulder location at 4593 Broadway is home to both a retail shop and a working grain mill — which means the flour used in the bread you buy was likely milled just a short distance from where you're standing. That is a rare thing, and it shows in the quality of every loaf.

The bakery was founded by Andy Clark, who built Moxie around a single idea: bread made from 100% heirloom grains sourced from local and regional farms. In 2020, Andy opened the North Boulder mill site to close the gap between organic grain farmers and the people eating the bread. After Andy passed away unexpectedly in 2022, his wife Phillippa Clark stepped in and has carried the work forward with the same commitment to quality and craft.

What They Bake

The bread is the star. Moxie is best known for its sourdough loaves made from heirloom wheat varieties like Red Fife, Emmer, Spelt, and White Sonora. These are not commercial commodity grains — they are older varieties with more complex flavors and better nutritional profiles. The slow fermentation and stone milling process produce loaves with a depth of flavor you simply cannot get from supermarket bread.

Beyond sourdough, the North Boulder shop carries:

  • Pastries, including almond croissants
  • Fresh-baked breads available daily until they sell out
  • Coffee drinks
  • Local retail products sourced from regional producers

The menu changes with the seasons and grain availability, so what you find on one visit may be different on the next.

The Mill at 4593 Broadway

The North Boulder location is also home to Moxie Feed & Seed, the consumer-facing flour mill, and The Mill Site, a nonprofit wholesale mill that supplies fresh-milled heirloom flour to chefs and bakers across the region. This setup makes Moxie one of the few places in Colorado where you can buy fresh flour milled from locally grown heirloom grain and take it home to bake with yourself.

If you are interested in baking at home, the shop carries bags of their own milled flour. Moxie has also been deeply involved in building the local grain economy through the Colorado Grain Chain, which connects farmers growing heirloom varieties with bakers and consumers who want them.

Worth the Visit

Moxie Bread Co. draws a loyal following from across Boulder, but the 80304 zip code is lucky to have the mill site and retail shop right in the neighborhood. Whether you stop in for a loaf of sourdough, an almond croissant and a coffee, or a bag of fresh-milled flour, you are getting something that took real care to produce.

Go early — bread sells out, and the pastries go fast on weekends.
